Introduction of PRC Gilgit-Baltistan Branch

The Pakistan Red Crescent Gilgit-Baltistan Provincial Branch was established on 20th December, 2007 followed by a notification issued by the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas (KANA) division under the Pakistan Red Crescent Society Act, 1920 called the Pakistan Red Crescent Society Gilgit-Baltistan  (Adaptation and Enforcement) 0rder, 2007. Initially the PRC-GB was having its Provincial Headquarters in the regional capital with few programs, later it has been expended to the whole region through a wide range of activities.

The PRC Gilgit-Baltistan Provincial Branch has been vigorously working on the key area of disaster management from the first day of its inception in the region. The department focuses on disaster management planning, disaster preparedness and response, disaster risk reduction for saving lives, protecting livelihood and strengthening recovery from disasters.

Some of the interventions of organization during natural disasters at regional level are included responding to the Attaabad massive landslide Hunza, 2010, responding to devastated floods, 2010 and 2011 in across the region, Earthquake, 2015 and undertaking to other major and minor disasters.

The PRC GB branch has reached out thousands of disaster affected people through its various relief and rehabilitation activities that included provision of Food and Non-food items to the affected communities, provision of shelters and cash grants in across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Besides disaster management, the PRC provincial branchis also implementing on some other programs activities which include Health & Care, Organizational Development, Emergency Response & First Aid, Youth & Volunteer Development, Communication and Dissemination of Humanitarian Values with support of its National Headquarters Islamabad and other Movement Partners by mobilizing a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

Apart from implementing its regular programs, the PRC GB branch has successfully completed a three years Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Rattu Union Council of district Astore with financial and technical support of Danish Red Cross.A “Strengthening the Management & Response Capacity of PRC GB Project has also been launched at PHQ level that is being funded by Canadian Red Cross.  Likewise, a DRR, Climate Change and Livelihood Development Project for Shigar valley Baltistan have also been launched in 2016 with support of the German Red Cross.

Currently the PRC-GB has its District Branch in Skarduwith some field based operations in Astore, Ghizer, Ghanche, Diamer and Hunza districts.
