PRCS and WWF-Pakistan Advance Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience
13 July, 2026
Islamabad, 8 July 2026: WWF-Pakistan, in collaboration with the Pakistan Red Crescent Society, convened a two-day national seminar in Islamabad to promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as a sustainable approach to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and disaster risks in Pakistan.
The seminar brought together senior government officials, policymakers, humanitarian and development partners, academia, civil society organizations, and private sector representatives to identify practical pathways for scaling up Nature-based Solutions nationwide. The event served as a platform to strengthen partnerships and accelerate the integration of NbS into climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development initiatives.
The Chief Guest, Amir Mohyuddin, highlighted the changing flood dynamics in Pakistan, noting that monsoon patterns are shifting westwards while Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and urban flooding are becoming increasingly common. He emphasized the importance of healthy forests, wetlands, rangelands, and protected areas in strengthening biodiversity conservation and climate resilience, while appreciating the contributions of WWF-Pakistan and PRCS in promoting innovative Nature-based Solutions.
Speaking during the seminar, Hammad Naqi Khan highlighted WWF-Pakistan's successful implementation of Nature-based Solutions through projects such as floating treatment wetlands, gabion bunds, check dams, and recharge wells. He noted that these initiatives have benefited more than 500,000 people across 16 districts and outlined future plans to expand climate resilience efforts through the Recharge Pakistan initiative.
Chairperson PRCS Farzhana Naek emphasized the growing importance of collaboration between humanitarian and environmental organizations. She stated that scaling up Nature-based Solutions requires stronger institutional coordination, supportive policies, sustainable financing, and meaningful community participation. She also reaffirmed the importance of partnerships among government institutions, humanitarian organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector to accelerate implementation across Pakistan.
The seminar featured technical presentations and panel discussions where participants exchanged practical experiences and explored policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration required to mainstream Nature-based Solutions throughout the country.
